Raptor-1 flashlight

Lately, you don’t know whether to be happy or sad about the rapid development of technology. The most sophisticated computer becomes obsolete in six months,

either a rifle will be made unusually accurate and light, or unprecedented knives made from damask steel will seduce with their unusual properties...

A few months ago

I sincerely believed that the best, most powerful and reliable flashlight in the world, described in the March issue of HUNT, “lives” on my SKS. As time has shown, I was very mistaken.

We received a whole line of the latest Megatorch flashlights for editorial testing. Straight from China, of course. It’s a shame, of course, that these lanterns (like many other things) are not made in Russia, but globalization and the peculiarities of our economy are doing their dirty work. So, the task before us was the following - to objectively test the flashlights for reliability and practicality.

At first we wanted to try to get the lights to stop working. But then we finally abandoned testing relatively fragile objects according to the field testing methods of Soviet small arms and settled on determining the limits of flashlight resistance to water procedures and recoil of 12-gauge weapons.

new line
of Megatorch flashlights

Quickly getting used to the good, you begin to perceive the powerful beam of light from the latest flashlights as not bright enough, despite its sometimes obvious redundancy. I would like an even more powerful beam that turns the selected part of the night into day. And just with the help of a compact and “indestructible” flashlight.

For the average person, one can only wonder how a processor can fit into such a simple thing as an electric flashlight. Or how a new processor makes the same LED shine brighter and further, with longer operating hours. Who would have thought just recently that a hand-held flashlight could shine as well as a car headlight? But modern technologies make it possible to do this.

From the black boxes, 5 completely different lights were taken out, anodized in different shades of gray. The smallest flashlight JET-2 Pro IBS, with a bidirectional clip, for a CR123A battery, is an excellent pocket accessory that is “always with you.” With its miniature size, it allows you to illuminate a person up to 50 m.

An elegant flashlight with a long thin handle JET-1 EX Pro IBS v.2., which can accommodate 2 AA batteries, is the optimal solution for those cases when it is difficult to get rare CR123A elements or when size does not matter. This flashlight can already be used as an under-barrel flashlight.

I really liked the cylindrical flashlight JET-3 ST Pro IBS, powered by a powerful 18650 Li-Ion battery - bright, combining small size and weight with a powerful light beam. The optimal option for car styling; due to its shape, it is perfect for carrying in a bag or backpack.

While we were testing and comparing small flashlights with the previously tested Warrior, it got completely dark.
And we included two “dinosaurs” - Raptor-1 and M1X Searchlight v.2. I must say that before this we showed the lanterns to various people, and everyone’s reaction was stormy and enthusiastic. Still would! A pure white beam of light from Raptor-1, up to 300 meters (the distances were measured in advance with a rangefinder) illuminating a person - this is truly something unusual. M1X Searchlight v.2 flashlight installed on Saiga-12

About 7 years ago, I had a Saiga-20C, secured with electrical tape, with a then fashionable xenon lamp and two AA batteries. Up to 25 meters, it faithfully made it possible to distinguish a bear from a wild boar and, at the same time highlighting the front sight, at this distance helped the eye determine the “place” on the animal’s body.

Now “Duracell” seems like an anachronism, because its light spot is completely “clogged” by the light of the smallest flashlight we tested.

By simultaneously pointing the Raptor-1 and M1X Searchlight v.2 at a dirt embankment located 50 m away from us, we were able to verify the specificity of these two lights. The large M1X Searchlight v.2., powered by the latest Cree MC-E LED and powered by two 18650 Li-Ion batteries, has an expanded light beam with powerful side illumination.

This flashlight is ideal for search operations, where not only the dimensions and weight, but the characteristics of the luminous flux are important. When comparing the M1X Searchlight v.2 with the Raptor-1 (we successfully tested the M1X with a remote button on a 12-gauge Saiga, and the pre-powered Raptor was shot without a button), we were convinced that the light spot of the latter was more focused in the center, which allows illuminate small objects more clearly. Comparing all the flashlights further, we gradually began to come to the unanimous opinion that the Raptor is a really interesting flashlight...

Raptor-1 Performance Analysis

We were especially interested in the Raptor-1's capabilities as a rifle light. Unfortunately, during testing we did not have standard mounts for this model with an attached remote button. The presence of a remote button implies the “tactical” purpose of the Raptor, so we expect the appearance of brackets with the next Megatorch flashlight models.

On one of the gun websites, I came across a post from a hunter who talked about successfully shooting a wild boar with a rifle equipped with daytime optics and the M20 Warrior flashlight, which I talked about last time. The message caused sharp rejection and criticism, since it was about a shot from a 200-m distance. We decided to test in practice the possibility of shooting at 200 meters using optics.

In “combat” testing of aperture, we used Raptor-1, which is positioned by the manufacturer specifically as an under-barrel flashlight. The assistant illuminated the chest target with a flashlight, I shot, firing from the SKS from my knee. Having shot several clips in this way, I simply screwed the flashlight to the carbine with electrical tape, which allowed me to more fully “feel” shooting with a flashlight.

Recoil has no effect on flashlights of this class in principle. It can be argued that “shaking” light bulbs, hydrophobia and other negative aspects from the recent past of stand-hunting lovers have become a thing of the past (for “urban” hunters and rural hunters who have access to printed publications and the Internet and can order a flashlight by mail, of course) .

So, having shot the first series from the 102nd distance at a silhouette chest target, I received 5 hits in the center of the target, and 4 bullets were clearly in the top ten. Knowing myself and my SCS, I can claim a good result. The target, illuminated by Raptor-1, was perfectly visible.

From a distance of 200, the target was quite visible, but there was no longer enough vision for confident shooting from an open sight; the accuracy deteriorated sharply (due to the poor visibility of the sighting devices, in the first place), although it was still possible to hit the target.

After that, we moved on to the fun part - shooting from a three-line rifle equipped with a Raptor-1 and a simple 4x32 day sight, manufactured in the 80s, with a duplex hunting reticle, mounted on a modified Kochetov bracket. Compared to a standard PU, a modern sight, even at 4x magnification, has a higher aperture ratio and better “picture” clarity.

I must admit, I was amazed at how bright the target looked through the optics at a distance of 100 - the optics “absorbed” such an amount of light that is unattainable for the naked human eye. Even the holes from 7.62 mm bullets, usually visible only in daylight, were visible. Photos taken with a point-and-shoot camera can in no way convey the real quality of the backlight, which is discernible “live.”

But they also make it possible to show that at a distance of 100, the effectiveness of shooting with illumination from a rifle equipped with an optical sight is almost identical to shooting in the daytime. At 200 m, the target illumination decreases sharply, but remains quite acceptable. Taking a comfortable position in the prone position, I was able to place 3 bullets in the bottom of an old small saucepan, which is more than enough for hunting purposes. At 300 m the target is visible, but aiming it is no longer easy.

Considering that the criticized hunter, who left his message on the Internet, could use high-quality “twilight” optics with high aperture and significant magnification, then I would not dare to call his successful shot at 200 meters doubtful - adequate optics and a good flashlight allow solving such problems .

conclusions

Evaluating Raptor-1

, I involuntarily compare it with the proven and already familiar M20 Warrior. But there are also advantages: according to popular wisdom, everything is learned by comparison. By the way, having adequately perceived the advertising of similar flashlights from other manufacturers, we asked a friend and compared with the M20 Warrior and Raptor-1 the FENIX TK11 flashlight, which is very good, but, as testing has shown, it is definitely inferior even to the “Warrior” in all performance characteristics.

with the light of xenon car headlights (light spot on the right)

The biggest plus of the new flashlight is its amazing brightness. A pure white stream of focused light (interestingly, the flashlight has the ability to focus the beam, which allows it to be used in a much wider range of tasks than non-focusable models), illuminating small objects at large distances - this is what hunters and tourists have been waiting for for a long time.

The flashlight has a conceptual novelty - a magnetic ring for switching modes, while they are tactile and audible - when you turn the ring, a quiet click occurs, felt by your finger. Those. – now you don’t have to turn the head of the flashlight, changing modes. A slight movement of the ring is enough. Using the ring, you can completely turn off the flashlight and it will not turn on if you accidentally press the end button - this is a very, very significant plus.

When scrolling the ring, the “self-defense” flickering strobe mode is first activated, disorienting the opponent when an unexpected light shines on his face (the flashlight has a steel leading edge, which allows you to break out glass and use the flashlight in hand-to-hand combat), then 3 modes follow with increasing brightness.

The flashlight has a durable sapphire crystal. The ergonomics of the device are well thought out; the body of the flashlight is made of exceptional quality from aircraft-grade aluminum and is protected by a durable coating. The lantern is perfectly waterproofed - even without the use of special lubricant on the connecting threads, the switched-on lantern lay at the bottom of a mountain river for half an hour, which did not affect its performance in any way.

The guaranteed operation of the LED will last the average hunter or tourist a flashlight for many years. I was pleased with the thoughtful design of the remote button - if necessary, you can disconnect the button along with the cord (by plugging the hole with a rubber folding plug), which, when alternately using the flashlight as an under-barrel and tourist, eliminates the need to take with you the extra rear part of the flashlight body.

For a flashlight, especially if you use it at maximum power, it is better to immediately buy additional batteries and a charger for them - they will pay for themselves in a few hunting or fishing trips.

batteries for Raptor-1

In general, we came to a clear conclusion - if you need a powerful but compact under-barrel flashlight that can illuminate the animal as brightly as possible at real night hunting distances and, if necessary, can serve as a tourist or search flashlight - the Raptor-1 will be an excellent choice .

It is likely that for some hunting tasks it is even too powerful, but, as we know, it is human nature to always strive for the best possible.

Good luck to you!
